All About Breeding

Our Mission and Enduring Vision

At Rare Flocks Farm, our mission reaches beyond farming — we act as custodians of living history. We are dedicated to preserving rare and heritage livestock, including Australian Heritage Angora Goats and Romney Marsh Sheep, ensuring that valuable genetic bloodlines are protected for future generations.

These breeds represent resilience, biodiversity, and more than a century of agricultural heritage. Rather than pursuing uniformity or industrial efficiency, we intentionally prioritise genetic diversity, recognising that resilience lies in variation.

Every animal contributes to a broader conservation effort, safeguarding traits that modern agriculture risks losing: hardiness, adaptability, longevity, and natural fibre quality.

Our purpose is not simply to breed animals, but to protect biodiversity through thoughtful stewardship, ensuring these rare flocks continue to exist as thriving, functional populations connected to land and ecosystem.

Rare Flocks Farm stands as a living example of what agriculture can be when guided by ethics, ecology, and empathy. We aim to leave the land richer, the animals protected, and the fibre industry inspired by a model where rarity is respected, sustainability is practiced, and farming becomes an act of guardianship.

Our mission is simple yet profound:

to preserve what is rare, nurture what is living, and create fibres that carry the story of care from paddock to hands.

Our Breeding Program

At the heart of our farm is a simple belief: the best outcome is always what’s best for the breed.

Our Romney Marsh Sheep and Australian Heritage Angora Goats are both rare and deeply treasured breeds. Rather than breeding for uniformity or high-volume output, we prioritise something far more important — genetic diversity, resilience, and long-term breed integrity.

This means we do not pursue inbreeding for consistency. Instead, we celebrate natural variation. As a result, our fibre may not be uniform in length, micron or even colour, the natural beauty is gathered and reproduced once the ideal pairings have been found. With this natural uniqueness comes striking natural beauty. Shades of cream grey, chocolate brown. Because to us, beauty lies in individuality. Each fleece carries its own personality. Some are long and softly wavy. Some form gentle curls. Some surprise us with natural colour variations. No two are ever the same — and that is exactly as it should be.

The Australian Heritage Angora goats trace their lineage back to the purebred Angora flocks brought to Australia from Türkiye in 1832. Our flock descends from Mr. Barton’s Banksia Flock of the 1950s, a foundational line that has remained untouched by later South African and Texan importations aimed at increasing commercial yield.

We are proud to steward these original genetics — preserving history, protecting diversity, and ensuring that these remarkable animals continue to thrive in their truest form. For us, this isn’t just farming. It’s guardianship. It’s respect. It’s legacy. And every fibre tells a story.

Connection, Craft, and Conservation

Quality Over Quantity

Rare Flocks Farm exists to reconnect people with the origins of what they create and wear. We serve makers, designers, fibre artists, and conscious consumers who value transparency, provenance, and story as much as quality.

Our mission extends into education and community:

• sharing knowledge about heritage breeds and fibre processing

• promoting ethical sourcing and intentional craft practices

• supporting regenerative agriculture as a future-focused farming model

• fostering appreciation for materials that carry meaning, not mass production

Rare Flocks Farm has a partner company called The Rustic Ram Co who specialises in taking the raw materials produced by Rare Flocks Farm and turning them into unique pieces of art - no two articles are the same, not two dye batches are identical and no two patterns match. This being said, what you are paying  for is one of the rarest minerals on earth being transformed into something that is yours and yours only.

Every skein, fleece, and fibre leaving our farm represents a chain of care — from soil to animal to artisan. By choosing Rare Flocks Farm, our community participates directly in conservation, helping secure a future where rare breeds survive, sustainable farming thrives, and craftsmanship remains deeply connected to place.

While The Rustic Ram remains our primary fleece partner, the fibres produced at Rare Flocks Farm lend themselves to a wide range of creative applications. We invite you to explore our shop to discover inspiring possibilities or to select from our carefully crafted products.
