What Is Intentional Farming?

What Is It?

Intentional farming is an approach to agriculture guided by purpose, stewardship, and respect for living systems. Rather than focusing solely on production, it prioritises animal welfare, soil health, biodiversity, and long-term sustainability. Every decision is made consciously, working with nature to create a balanced ecosystem where land, animals, and people can thrive together.

How We Achieve This

At Rare Flocks Farm, we live at one with our animals. While our animals have a place to call home, they are for the most part, free pasture animals. They roam where they want, consume what they want and are also supplement fed daily to ensure they have consumed enough nutrients to ensure their health and wellbeing is maintained. By supplement feeding, we also are able to cast our eye over the flock, ensuring that any health issues are found early and intervened early. Healthy, happy animals make for healthy, happy fleece.

Seasonal Variations

Rather than striving for perfect uniformity, variation is welcomed as evidence of natural balance. Each season may look slightly different, and each harvest may carry its own character — reflecting the rhythms of nature rather than industrial standardisation.

Long-term thinking is fundamental to this approach. Intentional farmers consider how their choices will affect the land and animals decades into the future. The goal is not short-term gain but generational health.

Product Uniformity and Limitations

We decide to work with nature and enjoy doing so. One thing that comes with working with nature though is that sometimes products are not available on a strict schedule. Sometimes there are limitations on production and other times there is over abundance. Please understand that if you are chasing a particular product, we will try to work with you and your timelines but at the end of the day, our animal health and wellbeing come first and we will not provide products prior to perfection!
